Year 5 & 6 Boys Football

All elements were present at Year 5 & 6 Football tournament on Wednesday 6th October. The winter was vast approaching with both partnerships preparing the pitches in the wind and rain early Wednesday morning.

By the time the teams arrived it was still drizzling on Alleyn Court’s playing fields however the pitches were in perfect condition ready for the days play.

The teams warmed up and began to play their matches with the knowledge that the best three teams in each group would go through to the next round which would be a knock out FA Cup style draw. With the whistles blowing to signal the start of matches the tournament was underway and the action was frantic with goals and skill free flowing.

The heavens opened and the rain came pouring down this didn’t stop the players determination or fighting spirit. Despite the umpires call for a break the players showed no sign of letting the weather getting them down. The rain eased off and the group games came to an end.

While the scores were being processed the clouds parted and the sun appeared for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The hosts Alleyn Court and West Leigh were the two teams in the final in what was going to be a tough test of stamina, speed and skill.

At the whistle the score stood at 1-1 going into extra time. It was with the use of a golden goal that West Leigh finally sealed their victory 2-1 and were crowned the winners of the year 5/6 Southend Borough football competition. Edwards Hall came in thrid place with Blenheim being presented with the Fairpalyers award.

The day ended with a special guest appearance from Billy Wingrove, football choreographer to the superstars such as Messi, Ronaldo and Torres. He performed a breathtaking freestyle routine and then gave the chance for some children and teachers to strut their stuff and learn a trick or two. Thank you to Billy for his performance and for taking time out of his busy schedule and we hope to see him at another competition or on TV very soon!

Congratulations to all players who participated in the tournament, coaches, teachers and parents who helped make the competition go so well and a fun day for all involved.

Special thanks must go to Alleyn Court for the use of their pitches and facilities, Southend United for their referees, Tracy Bennett the competition manager as well as SWSSP and SESSP staff for the refereeing and organisation of the competition
