Disability Day

Friday 11th March saw an impressive ‘Playground 2 Podium’ Multi Sports event, organised by David Hardman (School Sports Co-ordinator for the Castle Point & Rochford School Sports Partnership).

The event allowed over 40 students with various impairment from across 11 schools enjoy professional coaching sessions in a range of sports, including Judo, Cricket, Athletics and Football.

The event was a great success as a result of 3 School Sports Partnerships joining forces to offer a joint opportunity. Castle Point & Rochford SSP, Southend West SSP and Thurrock SSP all funded the event.

David Hardman commented “The students were a real pleasure to teach, all giving maximum effort.  It was a great day, enjoyed just as much by the staff as the students”.

Children from the Southend West Partnership really enjoyed the day:

“It was ok at the Playground to Podium, we went to waterside farm we did Athletics, Football, Cricket, Tennis , Badminton and Judo. It was really good” Harry Bradley.

“Today I went to Waterside farm and I did lots of sports, I enjoyed all the sports and my best was cricket because it’s great. I met a friend called Liam he was in my group” Liam Bell.

“Sports day at Waterside farm was really good. Lily and I did Judo it was really funny and we could not stop laughing. I came first in the Triple Jump, I liked the Judo, Athletics and Badminton. I would love to go again next year” Chloe Wood.

“I liked doing the Judo the best I beat Chloe at Judo twice. I would like to do this again it was fun” Lily Green.

The aim of the event was to enthuse these students to take up new sports especially with London 2012 fast approaching.

Our thanks also go to the staff at Waterside Farm Sports Centre, who were so accommodating on the day.

The three School Sports Partnerships have also combined to start a Multi Sport Academy for children with various impairments every Tuesday evening from 5pm to 6.30pm at The Deanes Sports Centre.

Thanks to funding contributions from Active Rochford, Active Castle Point, The Essex Legacy Team and all three School Sport Partnerships, this club is free to any students who wish to attend.  If provides regular sports coaching in a range of sports, with support from the School Sports Partnership, Southend United staff and a number of student leader volunteers.
