Netball Tournament

With the beginning of the summer sun came the final of the annual Southend Borough Netball tournament. It was a bright day down at Southend High School for Girls where the tournament took place under the careful guidance of Miss Simpson (Head of PE). The teams arrived in high spirits with what was going to be a close competition many teams believed they would be going home victorious.

The tournament began in the early afternoon with the initial group stages for both the A and the B teams to decide who would go on to the latter stages of the competition. The action was frenetic with games going one way then another with some very close contests whilst all teams were being cheered on by both parents and teachers.

Just after 4.00pm the knock out phase of the competition started with the quarter finals bringing drama to the closing stages. Once the quarter finals and semi finals had been fought it was time for the final. It was to be between Heycroft and West Leigh, everyone knew it was going to be close but no one knows how close. It was 2-2 at the end of normal time and even 2 sets of extra time could not decide a winner then for the best interests of everybody it was decided to call it a draw and both teams would share the trophy.

Congratulations to both West Leigh and Heycroft!

A big thank you must go to all the supporters, coaches, teachers and of course the students who kept smiling even if they were not always winning. A special thank you must go to Southend High School for Girls for allowing the use of their facility as well as the excellent umpiring and running from their students and staff alike
